Executive Search Firms in Queensland (2026)

26 September 2026 · Updated 1 October 2026

Queensland’s executive search market isn’t short of firms. It’s short of a clear map of who specialises in what, and that gets harder once AI is part of the brief. Search “executive search Brisbane” and you’ll get generalists, technology boutiques and national brands with a Brisbane office, all sounding much the same. If you’re hiring a senior marketing, digital or ecommerce leader in Queensland, or adding a new AI leadership seat, two things matter more than any firm lets on up front: whether it specialises in your function, and whether it can tell real AI judgement from a CV full of tool names.

How is AI changing executive search in Queensland?

It’s changing what Queensland businesses are hiring for faster than it’s changing how most firms search. A Brisbane or Gold Coast business replacing a CMO, COO or Head of Digital now usually wants someone who can decide what AI should do in that function, and who has handled customer data carefully while doing it. Some are also adding a new seat, such as a Chief AI Officer or an AI Compliance Officer, which few Queensland businesses have hired before.

That puts pressure on the search method. AI or ATS keyword screening rewards candidates who list the most tools, and can screen out the leader who quietly rebuilt a team around automation without using those words. We don’t keyword-screen candidates for that reason. When you compare Queensland firms, ask how they test for AI fluency, and listen for an answer about decisions a candidate has made.

Is Queensland’s executive search market well covered?

Broadly yes, but coverage of marketing, digital, ecommerce and AI leadership is thin. Brisbane and the Gold Coast have established generalist and technology-focused firms, alongside national brands with local offices. Firms known for that specialty are mostly based in Sydney and Melbourne, and Queensland tends to get a line on their site and little else.

That gap is why a Queensland business hiring a CMO, Head of Digital or eCommerce Director often ends up choosing between a Brisbane generalist who’s never placed that exact seat and a Sydney specialist who’s never worked with a Queensland business. Here’s how those three roles actually differ, and what each pays in 2026, including Brisbane-specific bands. Queensland pay also runs lower than Sydney’s: Robert Walters’ 2026 salary guide puts a Queensland CMO at $207K to $240K base against $220K to $300K in NSW, so a brief benchmarked on Sydney numbers can misread the local market.

How do executive search firms in Queensland differ?

Mostly on specialty, fee structure, search method, and whether they’re local or running a national brief.

Specialty comes first. Ask what share of a firm’s placements in the last two years were in your specific function. “Senior roles” doesn’t count as an answer. A firm that’s excellent at technology leadership may still be out of its depth on a CMO brief or a Chief AI Officer search.

Fee structure is second. Comparing on price is close to impossible without asking, because most firms don’t publish a number. As general context, Kolvera, citing the 2025 RCSA Fee Survey, puts the Australian contingency average at 17 to 18% of first-year base, down from 20% in 2015. The two shapes worth understanding are contingency, paid only if a candidate the firm presents gets hired and often run across several agencies at once, and retained: one firm, one role, a percentage of base salary plus an upfront engagement fee. The full breakdown, including our own rate, is here.

Then there’s search method. Ask whether the firm is headhunting, meaning approaching people who aren’t job hunting, or working from a database of past applicants. For AI-era roles that matters more than the firm’s size, because the people already doing the work well are rarely looking. We’ve written about why here.

Finally, local presence versus a national brief. A Brisbane or Gold Coast base matters if the hiring manager wants someone who knows the Queensland market. It matters less when the search is national, as most senior marketing, digital and AI searches are.

Where Headhuntly fits

Headhuntly is based on the Gold Coast and runs a specialist practice in marketing, digital, ecommerce, technology and C-suite search, now including AI leadership roles, and places nationally. We’ve placed 50+ senior roles over the last five years. We run one client, one role at a time, keep no candidate database, and publish our fee rate on the site. Most Queensland options are either local generalists or interstate specialists. Being Queensland-based and specialist at the same time is the part that’s hard to find.

What should you ask an executive search firm before briefing it?

Five questions, and each should get a straight answer. What share of your placements in the last two years were in this specific function? What’s your actual fee, beyond the fee model? Is this a headhunted search or a database search? How do you assess whether a candidate is genuinely AI-fluent? And if the hire doesn’t survive probation, what happens then?

A firm that answers “it depends” to more than one is worth pushing on before you sign anything.

Frequently asked

Do I need a Queensland-based firm to hire in Brisbane or the Gold Coast? No. Most senior marketing, digital and ecommerce searches run nationally, because the strongest candidates for those seats aren’t confined to one city. Local presence matters more for roles tied to the Queensland market than for a senior leadership hire.

Is a boutique QLD firm better than a national brand’s Brisbane office? Neither is automatically better. Size and backing differ, but specialty match is the bigger factor. Ask what share of a firm’s recent placements were in your specific function.

How do I check whether a Queensland search firm understands AI hiring? Ask how it assesses AI fluency. A useful answer is about what a candidate automated and what went wrong when they did. Keyword screening for tool names is a weak answer.

Do Queensland firms charge less than Sydney or Melbourne firms? There’s no consistent pattern by location. Fee model, contingency versus retained, and how a firm structures its percentage matter far more than which state it’s headquartered in. The full fee breakdown is here.

Does Headhuntly only work with Queensland businesses? No. We’re based on the Gold Coast and place nationally. Being Queensland-based helps us read the local candidate market, and we search well beyond it.
