Senior Marketing, Digital and eCommerce Salaries (2026)

26 September 2026 · Updated 1 October 2026

In 2026, a CMO in Australia earns $207K to $300K base in Robert Walters’ NSW and QLD bands, and $450K+ in some industries on mrkt Talent’s data. Head of Marketing sits at $165K to $220K, Head of Digital at $185K to $225K in NSW, and Head of eCommerce at $150K to $270K nationally. All figures exclude super.

The bigger shift sits inside those bands. AI is changing what a senior marketing, digital or ecommerce leader is paid to do, and a role that asks someone to redesign a team around automation is a bigger job than one that asks them to run it as it is. Title alone no longer tells you where a role should sit. Headhuntly is based on the Gold Coast and headhunts senior marketing, digital, ecommerce and AI leaders nationally, so here’s what the real 2026 sources say, each one listed on its own.

In this guide

How is AI changing senior marketing pay?

Mostly by changing the size of the job under the same title. With content and reporting increasingly done by software, a senior marketing or digital leader is paid for decisions, mainly what to automate and how customer data gets handled in AI tools. Two Heads of Marketing can now be doing very different jobs, one running an established function and the other rebuilding it.

None of the salary rows below price AI fluency separately, and we don’t hold AI salary data of our own. From the brief side: if the mandate includes redesigning the function around AI, it usually belongs further up the band, because fewer people have done that work well. If you’re hiring a dedicated AI leader alongside the marketing seat, settle who owns what first, because overlapping remits push both salaries around.

Why is the CMO salary you found online probably wrong?

Because crowd-sourced sites build their figures from a handful of self-reported salaries with no shared definition of the role. Search “CMO salary Australia” and the big job and salary sites give answers that disagree with each other by hundreds of thousands of dollars, some built from only a few entries. They’re describing different realities: junior marketing managers who gave themselves a bigger title, a genuine mid-market CMO sample, and a few ASX-listed outliers skewing the average.

None of them tell you what a CMO earns for a business your size, in your state, this year. The guides below at least say who they surveyed and when.

Base salary only, excludes super. QLD and Brisbane figures are the closest thing to a home-state benchmark, and worth checking against national numbers before assuming either one is the ceiling. For scale, Robert Half’s 2026 marketing salary guide stops at Marketing Manager, $110K to $150K base, with no Head of, Director or CMO rows.

Where Headhuntly’s own numbers fit in

We’ve placed 50+ senior marketing, digital, technology and C-suite leaders over the last five years. Our marketing leadership placements (Head of Marketing, Head of Content, CMO and Marketing Director roles) have ranged from $95K to $325K base, with a median around $180K.

Based on Headhuntly placements over the last five years. Small sample, base salary only, not a market survey.

We keep it out of the table on purpose. The full breakdown, and what AI fluency looks like in a CMO, is in our CMO hiring guide.

Our placement history in digital or ecommerce leadership is too small to publish bands for those roles. If you’re not sure which of marketing, digital or ecommerce your role is, settle that first. If it’s specifically an eCommerce Director seat, here’s what the brief needs to cover.

What moves a salary inside these bands?

Industry and company size move it most. Job ads rarely mention industry, but mrkt Talent’s national data shows CMO pay ranging from $220K in some sectors to $450K+ in others for what’s nominally the same title. Retail and ecommerce businesses tend to sit mid-pack; professional services and tech skew toward the top.

Company size matters more than tenure. A Head of Marketing running a $2M budget and one running a $20M budget are different hires, even with identical titles and years on the CV.

The mandate matters too. Steadying an established team and rebuilding it around AI are priced differently in practice, even under the same job ad.

And the QLD-to-NSW gap is closing faster than most people assume. Gybe’s 2026 data has it narrowing on several of these rows.

How should you set the salary for a senior marketing brief?

Start from the source closest to your industry, state and company size, then adjust for the mandate. The midpoint of a national range is a poor anchor. If two sourced guides disagree by more than about 20%, they’re usually measuring different populations, and both can be right.

COO pay has the widest spread of any role here for that reason: see why the seat itself varies so much. CTO pay varies almost as much, driven by how hands-on technical or governance-focused the seat is, and increasingly by how much AI infrastructure it owns. More on that split here. GM pay is similarly hard to benchmark nationally for the same underlying reason. What actually drives it is covered here.

Frequently asked

Why do CMO salary figures online vary so much? Because crowd-sourced salary sites pull from small, self-reported samples with no shared definition of the role. One might be counting junior marketing managers who inflated a title, another a genuine mid-market sample. None separate by state or company size, which is where the real difference sits.

Does AI fluency change what a senior marketing leader is paid? None of the public guides in our table price it separately, and we don’t hold AI salary data. In practice, a brief to redesign the function around AI is a bigger job and usually sits higher in the band.

Which source should I actually trust for a 2026 brief? Whichever one surveyed businesses closest to your industry, state and size. Robert Walters, Gybe Consulting and mrkt Talent all publish methodology and sample details the crowd-sourced sites don’t. If two disagree by more than about 20%, they’re probably measuring different populations.

Does base salary include superannuation? No. Every figure in the table above is base salary only, excluding super, and that’s true of all three sourced guides.

Are Headhuntly’s own numbers a market benchmark? No. They’re a placement record from 50+ senior marketing, digital, technology and C-suite hires over the last five years. We publish them next to the sourced guides, kept apart, and only for marketing leadership, where our sample is large enough to mean something.
