Australia's Senior Marketing Hiring Market in 2026

26 September 2026 · Updated 1 October 2026

The biggest change in senior marketing hiring this year is in what the jobs ask for. AI skills appeared in 2.3% of Australian job ads in August 2026, up 66.2% on a year earlier, according to SEEK’s August employment report. In the same month national job ads rose 0.5%, the first month-on-month rise since June 2025, though they’re still down 4.5% on a year ago. For anyone hiring a senior marketing or digital leader, the useful question is what a strong one looks like now that AI does a share of the work. Headhuntly is based on the Gold Coast and hunts senior marketing, digital and AI leaders nationally.

How is AI changing senior marketing hiring?

It’s changing the brief before it changes the candidate pool. Content, campaign variants and reporting can now be produced by software, so the board’s question for a new CMO has shifted from “can you run this function?” to “can you decide what it should look like when a chunk of its output is automated?”

That shows up in what employers want. CMO, Head of Marketing and Chief Growth Officer are the roles the recruiters in Mi3’s June 2026 senior-marketing roundup named as in genuine demand, with AI literacy, CRM and first-party data treated as baseline expectations. mrkt Talent’s 2025/26 survey found AI and analytics is the most in-demand marketing skill by a significant margin.

In our experience “AI literacy” in a brief can mean directing an agency that uses AI tools, or rebuilding marketing operations with AI in the loop. Those are different people. A brief that doesn’t say which will attract the wrong half of the market.

Is the senior marketing job market recovering?

Slowly and unevenly. Ad volume is rising again, but SEEK’s data shows applications per ad at peak levels, up 1.7% year on year, so employers advertising a role are getting flooded with candidates.

Six Degrees Executive, Johnson Partners, Hourigan and Perceptor, four of the recruiters Mi3 spoke to, all described the market at the bottom of the cycle, with supply outstripping demand and senior searches taking noticeably longer, in some cases twice as long as usual.

Why are senior searches taking longer?

Because the glut SEEK measures sits mostly at the volume end, while strong senior people stay put. Mi3’s recruiters describe CMOs who won’t move without a compelling case, a pattern Six Degrees’ Suzie McInerney called “job hugging.”

AI adds a second filter. The leaders who already run a lean, AI-assisted team are the ones their employer least wants to lose. They aren’t on job boards, and their CVs rarely use the words a keyword filter looks for. That’s why we don’t screen with AI or ATS keyword software, and why we headhunt rather than recruit.

There’s also a trigger worth watching. Perceptor’s Mark O’Connor points to 2024-25 producing more ASX CEO changes than any period in roughly 15 years, and that churn flows down into marketing. New CEOs bring in new CMOs, who restructure their teams. A new CEO is often the one asking what AI should do in marketing, which turns a replacement into a redesign.

Which senior marketing roles are in demand in 2026?

CMO, Head of Marketing and Chief Growth Officer still carry most of the demand. What’s changing is what sits inside them. Gybe Consulting’s Brisbane data shows Head of Marketing roles increasingly reframed as Chief Growth Officer, and Digital Marketing Manager reframed as Growth Lead. A brief written against last year’s title may already describe a role the market has stopped calling that.

Some businesses are also adding a Chief AI Officer or an AI Compliance Officer. If so, settle who owns tooling and customer data before either search starts.

A gap worth naming honestly

Spencer Stuart’s CMO tenure data, the most detailed dataset on this question, is US-only: S&P 500 CMOs average 4.1 years in role, shorter than other C-suite positions, and most who leave land a similar or bigger role within six months. Nobody has published an equivalent Australian dataset, and we haven’t found a credible figure for how many Australian marketing leaders are “AI-ready” either. If someone quotes you one, ask where it comes from.

What this means for a brief right now

Expect a senior marketing or digital search to take longer than it would have two years ago, because the strongest people won’t move without a real reason. A brief that states that reason, including what AI should change in the role, does more work than usual.

Who’s hiring shapes the brief too. An established digital business replacing a marketing leader often finds the last person was hired for the pre-AI version of the job. An overseas company hiring the lead for its Australian division has to decide whether that person runs local tooling or inherits the global stack. And watch your competitive set for CEO changes, often the earliest signal a senior marketing move is coming.
