How to Hire a General Manager in Australia

26 September 2026 · Updated 1 October 2026

To hire a General Manager in Australia now, decide what AI is meant to change in the part of the business this person will run. Then settle which GM job it is: a business-unit GM with full P&L ownership, or an operational GM running a site, state or function inside someone else’s strategy. Map which functions sit under the role and what the person can decide alone. Then headhunt. Strong GMs are already running something well and aren’t looking. A proper search runs 3 to 6 weeks.

AI has changed what a General Manager has to manage

A GM used to be judged on hitting the number and keeping the team steady. That’s still the job. What’s changed is how much of the unit’s work can now have AI in it: forecasting, sales reporting, customer service, a lot of the back-office admin. Now the GM decides which of those to change and how fast, and has to keep the team on side while it happens.

That sits on an old problem. “General Manager” is one of the least specific senior titles in Australian business, and AI widens the gap between its two versions. A business-unit GM can usually decide to automate. An operational GM is often rolling out a decision made above them.

In this guide

What are the two types of General Manager role?

The business-unit GM has full P&L ownership, sets strategy within the parent company’s limits, and answers mainly for the numbers at year end. It’s close to running a company inside a company.

The operational GM runs a site, a state or a function inside a strategy set elsewhere. Execution and team leadership matter more here than strategic authority.

Both get advertised as “General Manager”. People who apply to one often don’t fit the other, and a lot of GM searches lose weeks interviewing people who pictured the wrong job.

What does AI fluency look like in a General Manager?

It shows up in changes they’ve made and what happened to the numbers and the team afterwards. In a GM, AI fluency is mostly judgement about which work to automate and where a person still needs to make the call.

The GM candidates worth putting forward can tell you:

  • what they changed in their unit using AI, and what they decided to leave alone
  • how it showed up in the P&L or the team structure
  • how they handled staff whose roles shifted
  • where it went wrong, and how they found out

A business-unit GM should describe a call they made themselves. An operational GM’s answer is more often about rolling out someone else’s decision well.

That’s also why we don’t screen with keyword software. Good GMs talk about this work in margin and service levels. They rarely use the AI vocabulary a filter is scanning for.

Should you headhunt a GM or search a database?

For a senior GM seat, headhunt. The strongest candidates are already running something well and aren’t spending their evenings on Seek. SEEK’s August 2026 employment report put applications per job ad at peak levels, so advertising mostly brings more CVs to sort.

Headhunting starts from who’s doing the job well somewhere else and approaches them directly. We keep no candidate database, so every search starts from the market as it is now, and we run one client, one role at a time.

How much does it cost to hire a General Manager in Australia?

Across our placements, C-suite and general management base salaries (GM, COO, CFO, CSO, CCO and Director roles) have ranged from $130K to $350K, with a median around $195K.

Based on Headhuntly placements over the last five years. Small sample, base salary only, not a market survey.

The range is wide because the title is. What moves the number: the size of the P&L (if there is one), headcount, and how much of the strategy this person sets. Two GM offers at the same company can differ by six figures. A brief to rework the unit around automation usually sits further up. The broader senior salary picture is here.

On fees: ours is 15% of base salary plus super, payable on signed employment contract, plus an engagement fee upfront, which we walk you through on the first call. The detail is in our executive search cost guide.

What does a GM brief need before the search starts?

Start with the P&L question and what the person can decide without sign-off. A GM who thought they had P&L authority and finds out otherwise three months in is a resignation waiting to happen.

Then map scope. Does “general” mean sales and operations? Everything except finance and legal? A title without a functional map lets every candidate imagine their own version.

Write down what AI is meant to do in the unit. “Be more efficient” isn’t a brief. “Automate quoting and move the coordinators onto key accounts” is. And say who decides: the GM, or a CTO or Chief AI Officer above them. If you’re considering a dedicated AI leader, read how to hire a Chief AI Officer first.

Who’s hiring matters too. An established digital business replacing a GM may find the last one was hired for the pre-AI version of the job. An overseas company hiring the lead for its Australian division needs to decide how much the local GM can change without head office.

Headhuntly is based on the Gold Coast, has placed 50+ senior roles over the last five years, and runs GM searches nationally.

Frequently asked

What’s the difference between a GM and a COO? There’s real overlap. A GM more often runs one business unit, site or region within a larger company. A COO more often sits at the top of the whole organisation. Titles vary enough that this isn’t a hard rule.

Does a General Manager need P&L experience? It depends on which GM job this is. A business-unit GM almost always needs it. An operational GM running execution inside someone else’s strategy may not.

How much does a GM earn in Australia? There’s no reliable single national figure, because scope varies too much. What the person controls (P&L size, headcount, strategic authority) matters more than the title.

How do you test whether a GM is genuinely AI-fluent? Ask what they changed in their unit, what it did to the numbers and the team, and what went wrong. Talk about AI without a result attached usually means they haven’t run it.
